BJP-supported candidates head for win in UP Zila Panchayat chairperson elections | India News - Times of India
LUCKNOW: The BJP appeared headed for a major victory in the UP Zila Panchayat chairman elections, the counting for which is under way. As per ground reports, the BJP-supported candidates have won most of the 53 seats where polling was held. While the state election commission is yet to announce the results, reports claimed that the BJP has won in over 45 districts.
The ruling party-backed candidates had already won chairperson seats in 21 districts, including Varanasi and Gorakhpur, unopposed on June 29.
According to reports, the BJP supported candidates managed to register victory in Ayodhya and Mathura, the epicentre of Hindutva politics. While in Ayodhya, BJP-backed candidate Roli Singh defeated SP-backed Indu Sen Yadav, in Mathura, BJP-supported candidate Kisan Singh registered a win against RLD-backed Rajendra Singh Sikarwar.
The ZP chairperson elections had turned into a contest of prestige for the BJP and the opposition, primarily the SP, ahead of the high stake UP assembly elections due next year. While the ZP chairperson elections are not held on symbols, the BJP openly announced its support to candidates triggering a political frenzy in the opposition camp.
Even as SP challenged the BJP, the BSP walked out from the contest after party chief Mayawati announced that her party would stay away from the ZP chairperson elections. The win in rural local bodies polls potentially arms the BJP to further up its rural footprints.
